The history of the continent goes back millennia, and most of the stories prior to the destruction of the Third Empire are little more than myth. Even the Third Empire is shrouded in a sort of ancient mysticism, since only within the past two hundred years has the world emerged from extremely dark times, where it was clear that interlopers ruled anything outside the walls of the various remaining city-states that were scattered across the once vast realm.
Before the Third Empire met its demise two thousand years prior, it was a prosperous and mighty force, matched only by the Fortulans, an oligarchy of mages that controlled the entire southeast. Though the two nations maintained a courteous, if not competitive, relationship for much of their existence, the Empire chose to invade Fortulan territory, which began a long war in which the two powers engaged in bloody battles that would have ended in a stalemate, had the Fortulans not decided to open a portal to other dimensions. What came through was a destructive army of demons that overcame the Empire in ways never seen, before or since, but eventually, they turned on their masters and obliterated the Fortulans and Imperials alike.
As the situation appeared its bleakest, another army suddenly arose from among the fallen. No one could explain the resurrection of the dead, but their supernatural strength and speed were welcome weapons against this unstoppable horde. With slow but terrifying efficiency, this legion hewed the demons' numbers, but not before the infrastructure of the Empire and the oligarchy was completely destroyed.
The remaining demons either fled to their own dimensions or into the recesses of the continent, but the portal could not be closed, not even by the Fortulans themselves, which left the world at risk of further invasion. And so, the Legion remained, the last and only force left to keep the demons at bay.
